[libreoffice-users] printer paper size question

2013-06-24 Thread Fred James

Mageia 3, KDE4, LibraOffice Version 4.0.3.3 (Build ID: 4.0.3.3-2.mga3)
HP Laserjet 4m plus 9 MB memory

Error message: PC Load DL
where PC = Paper Cassette
where DL = paper size (approx. 1/3 of A4 sheet)

Printer paper is US Letter
Printer installed on Mageia 3 as US Letter
Printer in LibraOffice defaults to US Letter for full sheet
Printer in LibraOffice defaults to DL for envelope

Is this normal/expected behavior? Would not we have expected a default
envelope size more related to the paper size?

Navigation:
(after inserting an envelope in a text document)
File - Print - (select printer) - Properties - (Paper size reads:
Env DL)

Work around (on a per job basis):
Change paper size - OK - OK - File - Save (or Save As)

Another work around ... build templates

Any help/hints/suggestions?
Thank you
Regards
Fred James

You are printing envelopes, right?

Are you using the

and then deal with it from there?

I would format the page to the envelope I wanted instead of doing it
on the printer side of the process.

Also, there may be something in your profile that might be causing
some issues with the printer. This has happened to be from time to

Thank you for your reply. I shall answer your question, but first to
clarify the question:

This question is not about workarounds or the mismatch of user interface
and locale settings, but rather:
Why, if LibreOffice knows the paper is US letter, does inserted envelope
default to DL? Wouldn't it be more reasonable to expect a match between
paper and envelope size as the default? Or is this not
possible/reasonable? By the way, I did not have this issue under Apache
OOo under Mageia 2.

A second question, if I may: What do each of the settings control (user
interface, and locale)?

Answering your questions:

Memory: not an issue with LibreOffice ... sometime with websites and
some PDF's ... Ran OK under Apache OpenOffice, too.

Memory: printer is maxed out.

Envelope: printing fine

Format Page Paper - Format DL envelope? No, I am doing it through
File - Printer Settings
Doing it through Format gives a nice result, too, if one remembers to
set it to landscape

And either method can be saved/applied to the document

Thanks again

Fred James

Re: [libreoffice-users] styles for plays?

2013-06-26 Thread Fred James

Helen wrote:

I've volunteered to edit a one-time publication of a collection of plays.
The plays came to me
in different styles -- three of the plays came to me with all the

centered -- the characters's names centered a line above.

Some of the writers seem to have centered the names with a centering code
-- I can
highlight the name and use the left margin code to move the name to left
margin. Others
seem to have centered by spacing over! (yes) and I have to backspace until
I get the name
to the left margin.

None used a colon after the speaker, and the publisher wants it. I've made
some progress with
Search Replace -- Search for all incidents of TOM and replace with TOM
colon space. But the
most tedious part is moving TOM from center to left and bring his speaking
lines up to begin
on the same line. Is there any way I can put these plays into a style
sheet and save this work, or
would creating the style sheet take as long as what I'm doing? I've never
used styles. And this is a one-time
job so if I have to do it all by hand, at least it's only once.

Thanks for any advice,

Helen
Not sure this is helpful ... Things are so context dependent ... Let me
preface my remarks with:
(1) send a sample file to me (off line, if you like) and I could take a
look at it and see what I might be able to do?

(2) depends on the results of step 1

And so, on to what I have thought of so far ...

First I thought Macro (which I don't do anything with, so no help there)
Second I thought gawk ... and I played with that with some degree of
success ...

Steps:
(1) save document as (plain) txt (no encoding)
(2) in a terminal window, apply this command to the *.txt file ...
awk '{gsub(/^[ \t]+|[ \t]+$/,)};1' filename.txt newfilename.txt
... this removes all leading (and trailing) white space, and everything
is left justified. It takes out spaces, tabs, and centering, and the
result would look like this ...

Tom
said one
Tom
said two
Tom
said three
... and LibreOffice can open and edit the new *.txt file.

That doesn't get the speaker's line adjoined or insert the necessary :
either, but depending upon context something might be made to do the job?

I've played with the paragraph spacing, frames, page formatting, and almost
everything else, but haven't gotten it figured out yet. Any suggestions

Many thanks...

Al Vesper
Have you looked at label formatting? Example: Avery labels? I haven't
done this in a long time (maybe 1993-4), but I used to modify Avery
label formats to make custom layouts. In your case you would want the
3x5 sheet size with two 2.5x3 labels on it, no? Will your printer
handle that size stock? None of mine will.

Hope that helps

LibreOffice 4.0.4.2 (Build ID: 4.0.4.2-2.mga3)

LibreOffice has been working just fine all along, and then this printing
problem showed up just this morning (see details below).

So far this is only happening in this one file ... other LibreOffice
files I have tried print fine ... other apps print fine.

Any suggestions? Thanks.
Regards
Fred James

Problem scenario:
working spreadsheet open
Navigate:
File - Print
preview area has text in it that says No pages
same no matter which printer is selected
and of course ... nothing prints

Currently using this workaround:
working spreadsheet open
select a range of cells
Navigate:
File - Print
preview area shows a page w/only selected cells
page prints w/only selected cells

How does this second method work? Well, the test of equality gives a
value which can be interpreted as a number: 1 for TRUE and 0 for
FALSE. Multiplying this by your value switches each value on or off
in the sum.

I trust this helps.

Er, there is no typo, just some confusion on your part. The
original formula works. You have changed the test from X = Y to Y = X
and the product X x Y into Y x X. As any elementary mathematician
knows, equality and multiplication are commutative, so these are the
same thing: x = y and y = x are the same test; and 2 x 3 and 3 x 2 are
the same value!

Brian Barker
Sorry ... yes: x=y is the same as y=x, but when testing the original
function the results were incorrect. Switching the b's and c's made the
function return the correct results. Assumption (on my part):

the first part (C$2:C$5) is the column of values to be summed
the second part (E1=) is the value we want to match in the third part
the third part (B$2:B$5) is the column/range of values to be
matched by the second part

¿Sí?
So if we used column B for the first part we would be trying to sum
labels/text, and if we used C in the third part, we would be trying to
match labels/text to numbers?

Or did I miss something?

In any case, I must thank you for pointing to this solution ... it is
great ... I really enjoyed this.

Question: how are you looking for the file, through LibreOffice, such as in

Since a PDF file is not normally a LibreOffice format, I don't believe

I say normally because when exporting a document as a PDF, one does

3. Choose Move or Copy worksheet
4. in the dialogue choose copy and use the drop-down to select the

Tom Davies
Thank you for your reply and your solution ... I shall put that in my
notes for the future, as I do this same operation periodically ... but
too far apart to trust memory.

My original approach was to just copy the whole file and modify as
needed ... the problem I have with that is that I do the file copy a few
weeks early (for example early in December for a new file that begins in
January) ... reason: some December activity actually needs to be
recorded in January as well. That leaves me with certain sheets that
will need a lot of updating, and just replacing them is so much simpler
... your mileage may vary, of course.

Either copy solution (the one I stumbled upon, or the one suggested by
Tom) will do what I need quite nicely ... in the case of Tom's solution,
I will have to delete an older sheet in the new file, after copying in
the newest version (I have tested it), but that shouldn't be a show
stopper, eh? The copy process does not allow duplicate names (or
overwriting), and so appends a _2 (for example) to the name of the
newly inserted sheet.

Thanks again for your help

OS: Mageia 4, 64bit (if that makes a difference?)
LibreOffice: 4.1.6.2

I have two separate ODS files: 2014 and 2015

I want to copy a sheet (the entire sheet) from 2014 to 2015.

Is this possible, and if so, what is the recommended method?

Actually, there are a few sheets I want to copy from 2014 to 2015, but
one at a time.

Thank you
Regards
Fred James

[libreoffice-users] positive comment

2015-02-27 Thread Fred James

LibreOffice Version: 4.3.6.1 Build ID: 4.3.6.1-3.mga4
... does a very interesting thing ...
(1) I backup some documents on a daily basis, to a USB stick, which I
remove when not in use
(2) When I opened earlier versions of LibreOffice, the Recent Documents
list showed all documents from the hard drive, and from the USB stick,
whether or not the stick had been removed

(3) Now, when I open LibreOffice
(3.1) If the stick is still in place from the last use, all of the
recent documents on the hard drive, and on the USB stick, are also shown
(3.2) If the stick has been remove, whether replaced or not, the
documents on the USB stick are not shown

... I do like that.

And I do like the new graphical display of the Recent Documents list,
even though I can only see it when all documents are closed.

Thanks
Regards
Fred James

[libreoffice-users] help track an issue

2015-06-25 Thread Fred James
If anyone can help me understand how to track/trace this issue, I would
appreciate it.

Software
OS: Mageia4 64 bit
KDE4
LibreOffice 4.3.7.2 (Build ID 4.3.7.2.1.mga4)

Physical
HP Pavilion p6-2419
Kingston USB memory stick, (DT 101 G2 ... 16GB)

Filesystem
Ext4 in both cases

Procedure
(1) Insert USB drive
(2) Access USB drive with Dolphin
(3) Close Dolphin
(4) Open LibreOffice
(4.1) Close empty text document
(4.2) Open existing spreadsheet on local drive
(4.2.1) Compete task(s) in spreadsheet
(4.2.2) Save changes to local drive under same name/same
location
(4.2.3) Save As to USB drive with similar name ... date
added to name

(4.3) Close spreadsheet
(5) Exit LibreOffice

Problem
Sometimes (seems to be random) at step 4.2.3 the Save As fails ... error
message indicates that the original document is opened by another user?
Sorry, I cannot find the actual error message at the moment ... will be
able to supply it when it happens again, of course.

Note
I follow the above procedure carefully because it seems to experience
this particular issue the least. The only exception would be if steps 1
through 3 have already been done, and the USB drive is still attached
(has not been removed).

Question
What can I do to track/trace this issue on my machine?

Thank you
Regards
Fred James

[libreoffice-users] copying a ODS file and setting some cells to value in old file

2019-12-11 Thread Fred James

(Please forgive me if this is a duplicate ... thank you)

I do this every year, but this year I am experiencing problems

OS Mageia 7, Plasma
LibreOffice 6.2.8.2

The original file is an 18 sheet ODS file used for budget purposes

I can successfully copy the original file (in original location) to the
new file (in new location), either by ...

open the old file and save-as (File -> Save As)
    or
open Dolphin file manager, copy the old file, paste the file into a
new location, and rename it to the new file

    or
open a terminal and perform the copy operation there (cp
oldlocation/oldfilename newlocation/newfilename

Then in the new file, I delete unwanted sheets and data to start the
year fresh.  Next I set the values of some cells in the new file, to the
values of some cells in the old file. (Example:
='file:///home/fredjame/mystuff/budget/2019/budget_2019.ods'#$'TD
December 2019'.F114)

This has always worked well in the past, but this year, I am getting an
error in the destination cell ... at first that was ErrL514, and now it
is Err:540.

Can you advise, please?
Thank you
Regards

https://help.libreoffice.org/6.3/ar/text/scalc/05/0214.html?DbPAR=CALC

Thank you for the URL.  I found the definition of Err:540 ... "External
content disabled".  From there I looked at LibreOffice help and found
the instructions for inserting the reference/link to the cell in the
other ODS file "To Reference a Cell in Another Document", which I
followed right up to "Confirm the formula by clicking the green check
mark.", but I don't have a green check mark to click.

Then I tried looking for where the external content might be
disabled/enabled ... no luck so far.

Answers to the question(s) at Google seem to be written for other
versions of Libreoffice, because they don't match too well to anything
in this version (6.2.8.2)

Can you advise, please?
Thanks again

I can use Data/More Filters/Standard Filer to get:
Tran Type Amount
1 A   1.5
3 A   3.5

but sum(C1:C3) gives 7.0 (the sum of the unfiltered spreadsheet.

I can copy but filtered rows but that is too easy. :-)
What is the hardest overkill way? :-)
Maybe a template or macro that I can reuse.
I just want to filter them so I can add up the interest I got.

Assuming the above is in columns A, B. and C, and rows 1, 2, 3 and 4 ...
    In Cell D2 place ... =IF(B2="A",C2,0)
    In Cell E2 place ... =IF(B2="B",C2,0)
Drag those down to fill the relevant cells, and SUM those columns.

Would Libre Writer be a better choice?

Both LO Calc and MSO Excel will do this task for you ...
In LO Calc the navigation is ...
Format -> Page, select the "Sheet" tab, and at the bottom use "Scaling

the particular sheet.
Also you may want to change the orientation of the page (Portrait -

Format -> Page, select the "Page" tab ... the radio buttons for Portrait

Hope that helps

Second reply with a REAL answer: WAS: Re: [libreoffice-users] Printing 18 labels per sheet on Avery A4 sheet L7161

How may I adjust the margin between the first line of text and the actual label

the line down on the paper?

Once I have typed one label and edited it to suit, is there a quick way to copy
the one label to all the labels on the the whole sheet?

Grateful for your help please.

I searched one more time and found this useful information ...

Navagate: File -> New -> Label and do all the normal stuff including ...
Label Tab
   enter text for label content
   select sheet
   select label brand
   select label type
Format Tab
probably just leave that stuff alonw
Options Tab
   select entire page
   check Synchronize Content
(the printer and setup can also be done here)
Select New document
Along with the "new document" you will get a little dialog box for
"Synchronize Labels"

Now ... edit the top left label to achieve your desired formating, edge
spacing, etc.

Click on the Synchronize Labels button.
Done

What I have seen so far is that the LO label is intended to print from a
database (such as a list of addresses, and doesn't allow for what you
desire ... and by the way, I desire.

Sorry, I am no help there.

There is a way to change the top and right margins, but that is the
distance from the top and left edges of the sheet to the top and left
edges of the top, left label ... not really a good answer, eh?

Assuming that one wants all the labels on a sheet to be identical, all I
have ever been able to do is (as you say) format one label as desired,
select and copy the desired area of that label, and past that into each
of the other labels on the sheet ... one at a time.

Not much help there, I am sure ... I wish to know this as well, if there
is any way to do this.  But thank you for asking ... it prompted me to
search once again for the answer, although the answers I found (once
again) point to stuff that is not in LO, at least not in the version I
have.  Possibly out of date answers? Possibly the answer would vary a
lot between OS's?

Yes, this is possible and I've done it in the past.  What I've done is:

 * Use the "Format/Page" menu and click "Area" to set the page
background image.  Use the "Fill" menu to choose a bitmap, and
   import your JPEG image.
 * Then, I use the "Transparency" tab to set transparency of the image,

This works in Writer 5.1.x and should function similarly in a more
current version.

Hope this helps!

[libreoffice-users] Sort issue qustion

2023-04-25 Thread Fred James

This may be Linux specific, but please allow the question in case it is not

In the file manager (Dolphin) there are options to configure how the
sort of directory and file names will appear in the window,  for example
(the desired output) here)  ...

001_zFILE.odt
01_aFILE.odt
01_bFILE.odt
01_cFILE.odt
01_dFILE.odt
01_zFILE.odt

whereas in Libreoffice these same file display as ...
01_aFILE.odt
01_bFILE.odt
01_cFILE.odt
01_dFILE.odt
001_zFILE.odt
01_zFILE.odt

The issue is more annoying in the "File->Save" window, than in the
"File->Open" window, although I would assume that addressing it in one
might effect the other?

Anything I am missing here?  Any help or advise?
Thank you

Thanks for replying and for the offer. I've now installed Okular, and
it does (once forms are enabled) allow editing and saving of the form.
Presumably, evince and xreader are both buggy.

As well as my own efforts to see how things tick, I've also used the
examples at the foot of this useful instructional page:
<https://www.linuxuprising.com/2019/02/how-to-create-fillable-pdf-forms-with.html>

It still leaves the question of how to extract the data from the
completed form. Perhaps I've not hit the right keyword, but I've found
/nothing/ on the net. Surely if there's a way of filling in a form,
there's one of reading it!!

Mike Scott
Thank you for your reply on the Okular results ... that answers my
question, and I appreciate it.

As to extracting data in CLI, my first thought would be to use BASH
scripting, Sed or Gawk (or a combination thereof) ... even the Vi editor
has some search ability. ... does that help?

Hi all,
Is there a way to change the colour of the selected cell in calc to
make it easier to see which sell is selected?  Even if the outline of
the cell can be made darker.  I'm on Windows 10.
Do you mean that the selected cell should change colour only for the
time during which it is selected?
