It is important.

You shouldn't have paid for it, as it's a free download from

Whether or not someone else can access your documents depends on the

The ^ works fine for me, covering the entire screen, other than the task

Hello Regina,

Thanks for taking the trouble to offer help.

Perhaps if I describe my 'case' it will help to see where I am coming
from. I wanted to define a header for each page that is either a
copy of the previous header or a new one.

The application in my current case is collection of handwritten court
papers (from 1813) that I want to transcribe. The originals are in
jpeg. Some are just single sheets, some sheets are left and right pages
together, some are just snippets. Obviously the order is
important, and the source names of the jpeg files serve very well as a
header that should not of itself belong the the transcription text.
hence my simple requirement.

It was a deliberate choice to try to use the header feature (rather
than headings within the body of the text) because it made sense to me
to keep the metadata (i.e. file names of each sheet) separate from the
actual content of each sheet. In the end, I would have a complete LO
text document in which each page was headed with the file name to
identify its source and a page full of text showing the textual content
of each sheet. The resulting document would evidently contain 29 pages
with about 20 different headers.

I was expecting some simple implementation but, to my surprise, did not
find such. In the meantime Remy has made a suggestion that show how
much more complex it could be, than expected.

Greetings
Harvey

Are you referring to the International English keyboard I referred to ?

If so, you have to go into the input devices to select the layout.  On
openSUSE 15.1 & KDE, it's Configure Desktop > Input Devices.  In
Keyboard, Layouts tab, near the bottom, you'll find the area for
configuring layouts.  Enable Configure Layouts and make your choice.  I
selected English (intl., with AtlGr dead keys).  You'll then have a
layout for U.S. International English. You can see the layout here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_and_American_keyboards

You then use the right Alt (Alt Gr) and shift keys to select which
character a key represents.  For example, Alt Gr & ; = ¶, Shift Alt Gr &
; = °, Alt Gr & 5 = €, etc.

Most of the characters shown on the layout work.

I use cacert.org.  It's still free.

Are you trying to do this in a browser?  Use a real email client, such
as Thunderbird.  With it you can sort as far back as you like.  You can
also use it to archive mail by year.  Configure Thunderbird to use IMAP,
to keep everything in sync.

I bet that office still uses FAX.  ;-)

Many years ago, I used Wordstar 2000 at work and it had similar issues
with all the formatting codes.  I'd often go through documents clearing
up the mess others had created because they didn't understand what the
formatting codes did.  Like WP, Wordstar had a method to display the
mess^H^H^H^H formatting created with those codes.

No, it doesn't generate a digital version of your signature.  It uses a
process, related to encryption, to generate a signature of the entire
document, that verifies it could have only come from you.  This is
commonly done with X.509 digital certificates, which are traceable back
to some top level certificate authority.  As an example of a bank
perhaps, they'd issue you your own public/private keys, which could be
traced back to the bank and to the top level authority beyond.  Since
that signature couldn't possibly have come from anyone else, it is your
signature.

You may want to read up on how public/private key encryption works and
X.509 certificates.

At least one bank I'm aware of allows digital signing of documents.  So,
you might download a form to open an account, take out a loan, etc. fill
it out and digitally sign it.

Also, think about the current practice of many lawyers and other
professionals, who still fax documents.  It would be far more secure
than any fax could be.  In fact, given how easy it is to edit scanned
images, spoof phone numbers, etc., there's no way fax can be considered
secure these days.  Yet, people still use them.

When you take out a loan, etc., don't you sign the document?  There are
many times you sign things.  This is just  a digital way to verify you
did.  Without this, you'd have to print out the document, sign it and
then get it to the recipient.  With digital signing, you digitally sign
it and then can email it, right from LibreOffice.

Why would we want to, unless we had to? The whole point of the Open
Document formats was to be a non proprietary method that anyone can
use. Unlike MS formats, ODF is fully open. Perhaps you should go to a
site called Groklaw and read about all the nonsense with MS forcing
their new spec through ISO, to make it a standard, when even their own
implementation didn't comply with it.

I use ODF formats unless I have a need to use MS, such as uploading
documents to a web site that does not accept ODF.

I haven't heard of those characters in a very long time. Does anyone
still use them?

BTW, it's been well over 20 years since I last saw Wordstar.

My first hard drive was 30 MB. I also used PC-Write at home. I used
Wordstar 2000 & Word Perfect at work. I also maintained mini-computer

That works, sort of. I have to leave the size at small to see the
icon. If I leave it at large or automatic, as originally set, I don't

Actually, I had already seen that article. When I try step 3, it asks
what app I want to run. That's one of the things that make me think I
may have to reinstall W10.

Yes I have Googled and am trying the suggestions. No luck so far. I'm
beginning to suspect there may be other problems with this system, as
when I give my self admin rights, they don't appear to show up and some
other issues with saving settings etc. I suspect I may have to
reinstall W10.

I've done that a few times. Also downloaded into the admin account and
tried installing from there. All the usual stuff fails to work.

It's just the one system that fails and on that system, I can't even
install when logged in as admin. I get the same error message.

I always download to the Downloads folder and run it from there. As
usual, I'm asked for the admin password, but it still fails. This was
happening before yesterday's update to the Windows 10 Creators edition
and after.

As I mentioned, the other 2 systems were OK.

I'm trying to install as a user, as I always do, and provide the admin
password. I have not set any such policy and don't even know how to.

Two other installs went fine.

Any ideas?

Sorry, I misread. I thought you were trying to read a CSV. LibreOffice

FWIW, I have 3 instances of LibreOffice installed on W10 without problem.
Maybe this is a repeat of the old DR-DOS bug, where when Windows 3.1 was
installed on DR-DOS, it would complain about some bogus problem. ;-)

Well, the KDE menu uses those commands, rather than soffice and they
also work at the command line. If I use soffice, I get LibreOffice.
/usr/bin/libreoffice is a symlink to /lib64/libreoffice/program/soffice,
but /usr/bin/openoffice4 is a binary.

I use Seamonkey all the time and it works well. However, there are
other email & browser apps there as well, so it's more of a personal
choice. You can install the various apps and give them a try, to see
what you prefer.

It works fine for me, on both Linux & Windows 10.

Instead of clearing out a previous sheet, why not create a template and
use that to create a new sheet each year? At the very least, you could
create a blank sheet and copy it to the current year.

Not an additional keyboard. Rather change the layout. That's easy
enough to do in Linux & Windows. By using the international keyboard,
you get every character on the regular keyboard, in the same location,
but you also pick up more characters. Those are accessed via the right
Alt key.

Having done that, you might want to install the U.S. International
keyboard, should you ever require that symbol.
With it, I can press the right Alt key and c to make ©.

After that happens, press Z for undo.

While I haven't done this in a spreadsheet, I used to on a calculator.
I did it by converting between decimal degrees and degrees, minutes &
seconds.

BTW, as an indication of how long ago I did this, I used this method to
add up the time for tracks on an LP to figure out how much time I'd need
on a cassette. ;-)
