You should choose View->Character->GPU Deformable Geometry to get the textures (and much faster rendering...)
I haven't documented sbm-fltk yet. You can try launching the BML Creator to make your characters do something (see the manual for BML Behaviors). If you select a character (choose the base joint, usually in the middle of the character, at the feet for Utah, the man in the apron) you can then right-click to make them walk to that location. The configuration file for that scene is located in smartbody/data/sbm-common/scripts/default-init.py. Anything in particular you want them to do? The manual isn't terribly clear what the sbm-fltk program is supposed to do. When it started, I just saw skeletons. Choosing View > Character > Deformable Geometry got me gray people.
