When I do that, gray people appear for a fraction of a second, then 
disappear leaving nothing.

In the command window that appears before the GUI window, the first few 
lines say:

'import site' failed; use -v for traceback
SBM ERR: ttu_open FAILED

Could not connect to localhost:61616

Does that give any clue as to why GPU Deformable Geometry isn't working 
right?

Not at the moment.  I was just looking for an indication that stuff was 
working.
