My  t420 works just fine.

The plan 9 boot process is quite unfamiliar if you’re used to Unix, and I
can’t escape the feeling that there’s some little thing you’re typing
wrong. It’s been solid for me on machines like this for a very long time.

You’ve been showing the prompts, but you haven’t been showing us what you
type, or at least if you have I’ve missed it.

When you get the root is from prompt on the 420 what do you type

I’d suggest you get your set up fixed and then give us the more information
you’ve talked about.
