Hi, Steven

Spyware is still in its infancy, so to speak, in regards to detection and
removal. There are a great deal of products out there that make claims to
remove everything and you will find that none of them remove it all.

The first rule of spyware, etc protection is your surfing habits. You need
to look at what and how you do things on the internet. This is the most
important rule yet. Some of my recommendations are as follows:

1. If you are a gamer and/or you download a lot of software, music, avi's,
etc then you need to purchase a seperate computer to handle just that kind
of surfing. The other computer should have just the operating system on it
and the browser you will use. Add in a firewall and antivirus program for
some protection while you are connected (this type of surfing will still
leave you wide open to attack anyway but some protection is required
anyway). This way you can surf as you wish, download, scan and occassionally
just reformat and reinstall the system (when you first set it up do a Ghost
of the system prior to connecting then when you reinstall it is simple and
ready for surfing again).

2. If you don't do the above then be very very selective in what sites you
visit. Implement the following:

a. Hardware firewall (you may have this if you are on DSL etc)
b. Software firewall on your system (I use ZA Security Suite which has the
firewall, spam protection, antivirus protection, IM protection, etc.)
c. Install the following:
  1. Spyware Guard
  2. Spyware Blaster
  3. Ad-Aware SE
  4. Spyware Search and Destroy
  5. The full paid version of Spy Sweeper (SmartComputing rates it pretty
darn high as some other periodicals do)
  6. DO NOT INSTALL the Windows crappy spyware tools.

d. Use tools such as the paid versions of CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) and
MRU-Blaster. Use these tools periodically to keep your system cleaned.
e. Get rid of XP Home edition and convert to XP Pro. Higher security
capabilities and more security configurability for you.
f. Go the NIST and download their security template for Windows XP
Professional and implement it.
g. Kill any other services your system does not need.
h. Use the full version of Mailwasher Pro to screen your incoming mail.
i. Do NOT USE Outlook. Use Thunderbird mail program along with Mailwasher.
j. Follow good password security.
k. Use encryption when necessary.

Off the top of my head this should provide you with additional security and
protection. It should provide you with a good start anyway.

Good Luck Steven

Charles
