I go further than that. I have about seven additional partitions, not
difficult with gigantic drives upwards of 100 Gigabytes. But the important
thing [as you implied] is to have your data files, the ones that you have
created or in any other way will not be installed by your rescue CD, on (a)
partition separate from the C: drive, that way it will not be endangered
when you run the rescue disk(s).  And don't forget your address book, your
favorites, and any other configuration files. I guess you could use the
'Documents and settings' folder if you have XP but I only tried that once
and was unimpressed.
