I think that you're right. It seems to be the battery. I'm trying to do this
thing that Toshiba lists as "step charging". My question for you is this.

Can't you use it plugged in? Does the battery have to be charged?

Does the comuter go through the shutdown process or just quit as if the 
power was disconnected? If the latter it could be that the battery needs 
replacing and maybe the power cable is loose as well. If it shuts down in 
the normal way is there any error message before it shuts down?
