My instructor taught us (and I don't do it anymore either) is to make sure the
power is off AND disconnected when opening the case. You're supposed to be
wearing a grounding strap or be otherwise grounded as well (don't do that
either). Once inside the beast, I power up whenever I need to. I just unplug
each time I have to touch something internally.
