My understanding is that the most effective AV strategy is to detect a  
virus when it first arrives. Some say that if that fails then after  
the fact detecting may not work. While you might want to download AVG  
the free AV program, I don't think it will be very good after the  
fact. The only solution I know of is maybe System Restore if you have  
XP. The last ditch solution is to reinstall everything, OS and all the  
software, AFTER reformatting the drive. Anything else could probably  
leave a virus on the machine. But you may not actually have a virus. I  
think that one can only be certain that a problem is due to a virus is  
by detecting a specific virus.

I have never been hacked or had a virus but my solution for  
performance degradation is the same one described above. And I prepare  
for that possibility by cloning my C partition using Norton Ghost.  
Then when I feel the need I just reverse clone C so that the original  
clone is now the C partition.
