One that maybe I could find online I am so desperate.

That suggests to me that he might have one or not. What he asked for was a
way to find it,

While I agree that AVs are designed to prevent attacks, scans are detecting
tools and that is what I suggested and advocate.

The idea of the clone is OK if that is how you wish to consider future
protection but as an option to put up every time some says they think they
have a virus is like offering the hammer to crack the nut.

No, I am sure most users just want to know they have protection they can
rely on.

I assume you are talking about System Restore. And yes, this would be
true if the virus is old. The poster seemed to be saying that he just
got the virus. He didn't even show evidence that his problem WAS a
virus.

My Gurus, i.e Leo Laport and his cohorts, seem to believe that
getting rid of a virus after the fact, that is when it ws not
detected, is extremely difficult. He says that he thinks that AV
programs are much better at catching a virus as it shows up than at
getting rid of it if it is not detected. For example, if you install
an AV program to find existing viruses, there is less chance of
success. I can't say from experience, I have never had one.

Probably not after the fact, But if you start fresh, after a reformat
reinstall of the OS and the software, then run a cloner like Norton
Ghost, all you have to do is have some place to save the clone and if
things go South, just clone the other way, not at all difficult, then
you bring things back the way they were when you first cloned the C
partition or even the whole drive.
