Grisoft AVG has the reputation because its free and probably the best of
that bunch but not the best protection.

No but I think that one should install some kind of AV program.
Grisofts AVG has a very good rep and a free version is still available
for individuals. That's what I use, but I must admit that I have gone
without an AV at times and still never got a virus.
