In the early Windows days you could type Win at the dos prompt to get
it to run. I don't know that this will work but it is worth trying. I
wonder whether firefox cause this problem, probably not. I have not
had this kind of problem in quite some time. So my trouble shooting
such problems has become rusty. These days when things get really bad
I just reinstall Windows. Actually I have a clone of Windows that I
recover from some of the time. I use Norton Ghost. I try to always be
ready to recover from a disaster. First I keep my data backed up. And
I make sure that I have install sources for all the programs that I
have installed since I first installed Windows. And of course the
clone solves most problems.
I don't think that I have been of much help except to suggest the
reinstall option. Knowing all the ways to recover without reinstalling
is for the pros, and I don't know how many of them are very good at
it. Reinstall seems to be the most common solution. People often say,
'It's not IF your computer will fail, but WHEN.' I don't know that
it's that bad, but it certainly does happen and being prepared before
it happens is the best solution.
