Which version of Windows was the one on the Dell disk. Unless it was
older than XP you also lost any drivers that may not have been in XP.
Not to mention any good bundled software.

drivers come from? The OS disk?

You didn't need to know. If you choose an upgrade install that should
not replace any drivers that XP didn't have better ones for.
