Well, this brings me back to the original problem which I resolved
somehow. I do allot of audio and image editing. I have one gig memory. I
loaded 7 big programs along with my everyday programs. I loaded
Acustica, Audaicty, Sony Sound Forge, Photo Shop and Gold Wave. I also
had two programs for uploading audio files that came with my Olympus
digital recorders.
I was running Office 2002. I started having problems with Word. When
ever I tried to highlight something for editing, copying, etc. the
program crashed on me. I decided to remove Office 2002 and install
Office 2003 since it included Publisher - a program I wanted. Someone
gave me the copy of 2003 from their college. Please, I already caught
hell from others in these groups for using an MS product that I didn't
purchase privately so we don't need to go there again. In the
meanwhile, MS downloaded and installed sp 3 for XP along with some other
updates. Well when using Office 2003, all programs worked except Word. I
couldn't get past the splash screen. It would freeze and I would have to
reboot. On reboot, it took me to safe mode so I could use Word. In safe
mode there is no splash screen. I started thinking it was a memory
issue. I used MSCONFIG and stopped almost everything from running at
start up. The only items at start up were what my pc and broadband
needed to run. My system seemed slow and unstable. I removed 2003 and
reinstalled 2002 (Office). Now Word would not work either in 2002. I
couldn't get past the splash screen. I posted my problem in these boards
and got some good advice. My HD is 160 gig and I still have half open. I
removed many of the programs that I used little. I ran scan disk and a
virus scan. I ran add and spyware detectors. Both found problems. I used
regedit32 and physically removed entries. I then ran reg booster.
Finally I ran Smart Defrag. After doing all of this. My instability
problem was gone and Word worked fine!
Now I haven't explained and I probably should have, I am visually
impaired and use a magnification program called Zoom Text. It runs all
the time. It uses allot of memory.
Taking all this into consideration - and not wanting to continue an
already exhausted thread - I figure I had a memory issues in that I
needed more.
I have learned allot of valuable information in the mean time. Thanks to
Ivan, Jim and Emile. The best I learned was from Ivan and his restore
article since recently my friends nephew came to me with a problem. His
laptop crashed and he didn't know what to do, all his college work was
on it. He asked if I could access his hd and save his work which I
couldn't. He finally did the control f11 restore (It is a Dell laptop)
Now thanks to Ivan, I may be able to help in the future!
I am only posting this lengthy reply so that you all know where I am
coming from. My problems are solved!
Thank you to all who have given excellent advice.
