Ok - here is what happened. I bought an oem copy of Windows xp Pro. I
never used it because I bought a new Dell Dimension 4700 desktop that
had Windows XP Pro installed on it a month later. It had bundled
software on it also. It also had the Norton restore option where I had
to press control f11 at boot if I wanted to restore the machine back to
the day I bought it.
About a year later I decided to reformat and take the Dell Windows XP
Pro and all the bundled software off. I then installed the MS OEM
Windows XP Pro onto my hd. I didn't have a drivers disk for the mother
board, etc. I called Dell and they sold me one for $10.00. I put the MS
OEM Windows XP Pro version on my pc and did all the MS updates. I put
the drivers disk in while under windows. It brought up a list of models
and I selected mine - Dimension 4700. From there I installed drivers for
the ethernet card, usb ports, chip set, monitor, modem (which I use for
fax) and display and sound.
I take pretty good care of my computer by doing routine maintenance and
rarely have a problem. If I do have a problem I hit these boards.
Recently I started having problems with Office. Through these boards I
found out that although I have a gig of memory, I was running out. I had
installed various other apps that were memory hogs. I deleted some
programs, cleaned up the registry and defraged. I ran anti spyware and
spam devices. I ran virus checks.
My computer is now running very smoothly. My original topic opened up
more discussions the more questions I answered. It is to the point right
now that I am repeating myself. My problem is fixed and I have learned
more then I new about different things. I think this thread should be
closed.
Thanks Jim and everyone that offered advice and information, it is
greatly appreciated.
Mick
