It is never risky to buy a <$20 USB hard drive case!  It is one of  the most 
important tools anyone can own.  If his drive is still capable he  will be 
able to use it as a USB external drive Backup medium,  and $20 to  save 
important 
data does not sound like much of a risk.  Of course I have  never had a   
hard drive that could not be read in a hard drive  case.
