Well, maybe not... but lots of people have had to replace their cordless phones for a model that runs on a different wavelength. So if you do have a cordless phone in the house it would be worth trying to connect while it's unplugged. It's possible your laptop's wireless network chip is weaker than your son's? Or whatever, heh.
