Hi Mark -
If you have Microsoft's automatic update enabled, yes, you'll be getting
lots of updates without being prompted for permission. You can disable
auto-updates, or set it to ask permission before installing them.

Again, the first thing to try would be a System Restore to a date
previous to when the prob started. Since you know it was about 1 week
ago, just choose a dates that's 2 weeks back maybe. Go to Start, All
Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click System Restore. Just
follow the prompts to restore to a previous date, pick a date, and let
it do it's thing. You won't lose any data. Doing this restore will get
rid of any MS updates that were installed, and it'll replace any system
files that might be causing your prob.

There should not be an issue with backing up QB. If the System Restore
doesn't work I would try uninstalling QB, then reboot, and re-install
QB. Doing that will repair any QB files that might be damaged. It
won't get rid of your QB data files - but, as always, back them up first
(if you can).

If none of the above helps - repost. It could be a background app that
is interfering with QB.
(I assume you are backing up to your main hard drive? Or are you
backing up to another device?)

Good luck,
Donk
