Namaskar again!

Google says this much about Talkback 12.1:

TalkBack 12.1:
• Automatic captions for unlabeled images that contain text
• Window navigation

It's natural that people may think this "Automatic captions for unlabeled images" is OCR feature.

But CSR does have this OCR capability of its own.

You are right, Various phones from various manufacturers are there having various additional features, even stock or pure Android phones lag behind.

I don't think so. People who have not activated their select to speak are able to use the OCR feature, especially on images and some unlabelled buttons. Android OS being a part of open source regime, you never know which phones have what additional features.

Namaskar Vikas and all!

There seems confusion here.
the feature you are talking is not talkback feature, rather it's Select to Speak one. And now, it's part of Android Accessibility package. both Select to Speak and Talkback are parts of Android Accessibility suite.

In google's words, "Android Accessibility Suite is a collection of accessibility apps that help you use your Android device eyes-free or with a switch device.

Android Accessibility Suite includes:
• Accessibility Menu: Use this large on-screen menu to lock your phone, control volume and brightness, take screenshots, and more.
• Select to Speak: Select items on your screen and hear them read aloud.
• Switch Access: Interact with your Android device using one or more switches or a keyboard instead of the touch screen - **newly added** Camera Switches to navigate with facial gestures. • TalkBack screen reader: Get spoken feedback, control your device with gestures, and type with the on-screen braille keyboard".

I hope, confusion is clear now.

Still, I am pasting here relevant part of Google help article on using Select to Speak for OCR purpose with it's URL:

yet to get this feature, I can't guide you more on this, but many people

ability to perform OCR through built-in
OCR without any third-party app??I first thought I've miss read it! I'm not
aware of any such feature on my phone! There is one addition related to this
though which is known as "Automatic captioning of unlabled images containing
text" but I can't find it anywhere in the talkback settings! but then may
be, it only pops up when there is an unlabled image with text.

Hope to learn more on this.

Best,

Satguru.

Hi,

Many of us using non Samsung phones have been admiring the touch and
double tap to type feature of the Samsung keyboard on their phones for
years! That changes with TB 12.1! You can now activate this feature on
almost any android phone running the mentioned version of the TB.

Steps: Open the TB settings from the TB menu (Swipe up then
right),navigate to Advanced settings and then to "Typing Preference".
You'll find two options: Hold finger to select key, then double tap
and second, Hold finger to select key, then lift. The second one is
activated by default. I've tried it on my Oneplus 8 running Oxygen
11.0.9.9 based on Android 11 and it is working fine. I prefer the
standard method though, but that's the personal choice

Enjoy!

Best,

Satguru.
