I don’t think that a one-size-fits-all approach is feasible or fair in this
context. An inclusive approach to providing banking facilities and services
requires that we understand and address the diverse needs and challenges faced
by customers with different abilities, limitations and constraints. It is not
equitable to expect everyone to sign uniformly, at least using the conventional
signing methods. While there can be several alternate approaches to such
challenges like digital signatures or biometric authentication, they cannot be
considered effective until a large scale implementation of such measures is
ensured. Until that happens, putting thumb impression should be considered as
an equivalent alternative, and no bank can or should deny any banking
facilities on this ground.
