I just purchased a dual processor PIII IBM server on
EBay. With some RAM, and a a cheap upgrade to the
processor, I have a rather powerful server... for
about $400.
I prefer Macs for my own use, i.e. to touch. But for
servers that are hidden in a closet.. PC servers do
pretty well.
That said, our in-house sales/project management
database runs on a dual PIII 1.4GHz server. It's
pretty fast, as far as Active4D is concerned, but does
bog down during the day with many client users, but
that is only for 4D Client, and a badly designed
database that I am slowly overhauling.
I would suggest you try a leftover server, and measure
your effective performance before you shell out money
for a new server.
And then, Active4D still runs pretty fast.. :)
sincerely,
m|a
