First thing is to check geeks.com for deals on complete PC systems.
Also subscribe to the e-mail from Tiger Direct, which frequently has complete
PCs for $300 or less that will handle video editing very well.
Last week they had a 3.0 Ghz dual core AMD, 3 gig RAM, 250 gig SATA hard drive
and DVD burner. The motherboard had nVidia GeForce 6100 onboard plus a PCIe x16
slot to upgrade. Micro ATX board in a mid tower with 10 or 11 drive bays.
Price? Only $200! Didn't include monitor, mouse, keyboard, Windows etc.
They didn't plump it up with a latest generation videocard- to keep the price
down, but that's better than the cheap boxes shorted with half the RAM you need
or a smaller hard drive. There's almost always one part that's 'undersized' in
the really low priced PCs. The only reason to put a PCIe card in the above
system for video editing would be to free up the main RAM it uses for video
memory.
Before you buy a new PC, find out if you'll be buying any specialized hardware
for video editing so you can ensure any computer you buy has room to install it.
