I thought you were a non-profit charity Brent :) 

As far as the trademark goes I look at it this way they created it and
they can protect it as they see fit since damage to it causes damage to
their business. I recently enquired about said trademark and found it to
be pleasant even though I may not use it in the end. 
(disclaimer: No, I don't want to argue the finer points of trademark law)

It's amazing how we can go from trying to help ORA advocate Perl one day
to bashing them the next. 

How can we advocate Perl when we still bicker amongst ourselves and bite
the hand that tries to help in its not entirely self-interested own way?

Greed at least gives people one very well defined goal.
