I think I'm the only person on this list who believes that good art exists --
not merely as the personal opinion of an individual or the collective opinion
of an institution - and with no scare quotes required.
Everyone else denies it, but eventually, everyone will sneak such a notion
into one of their sentences.
So, now I am beginning this ongoing thread to catalog the ongoing examples
that appear on this listserv.
Beginning with:
"Samuel Johnson wrote most of his good stuff solely to get money" Cheerskep
(2009/02/24)
Perhaps, Cheerskep would happily replace "good stuff" with the phrase "stuff I
think is good" or "stuff that gets anthologized the most".
But .. that's not what he wrote -- and if anyone here is able to choose the
best phrase for what he has in mind -- it would have to be Cheerskep.
