I feel like good art exists only to those with relatively similar
experiences.

I am prepared to say good art exists, that something we tend to

I do accept an external reality.
I do accept that the external reality has form.
I do accept that our consciousness/ feelings/opinions of the
external reality is partially derived from our sensing of its form.
I do accept that some configuations of the external reality exceed
our best efforts to fully explain their forms as symbolic of our
consciousness.
Some of those configurations can be termed good art.

I think I'm the only person on this list who believes
that good art exists --
not merely as the personal opinion of an individual or the
collective opinion
of an institution - and with no scare quotes required.
Everyone else denies it, but eventually, everyone will
sneak such a notion
into one of their sentences.
So, now I am beginning this ongoing thread to catalog the
ongoing examples
that appear on this listserv.
Beginning with:
"Samuel Johnson wrote most of his good stuff solely to
get money" Cheerskep
(2009/02/24)
Perhaps, Cheerskep would happily replace "good
stuff" with the phrase "stuff I
think is good" or "stuff that gets anthologized
the most".
But .. that's not what he wrote -- and if anyone here
is able to choose the
best phrase for what he has in mind -- it would have to be
Cheerskep.
***************
Other examples will follow as they appear in our
discussion.
( I am sure that very soon William will be telling us
something about "the
best painting" )
