I wonder if it's a negotiating tactic. Downplay your offer and talk up the alternatives in the hope that you'll sweeten the pot. I don't know how many people really attempt such things, but it might fit your observations.
In my wireless days people would always compare our $29.99 and say they could get the same price from cable. The cable deal was obviously a one-year promo which they were comparing to our normal bottom tier price. ________________________________ From: AF <[email protected]> on behalf of Ken Hohhof <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, August 5, 2026 3:23 PM To: 'AnimalFarm Microwave Users Group' <[email protected]> Subject: [AFMUG] is it common for people to think they're paying more? Often when talking to current customers, they think their current price is higher than it is. Like if they’re asking about increasing their speed tier, they’ll say they’re paying $75 now when it’s actually $50 or $60. In some cases they are on autopay so maybe they don’t get a paper invoice and would have to check their credit card statement to see what they’re paying. I’m just wondering, is this a common trick our brains play on us? If it was just poor memory, I’d expect the errors would be randomly high or low, not consistently high.
