I'm very interested in the parallels that this thread has to our industry. And the response that we have to someone else basically doing the same thing we do.

Powerco has Single line into a subdivision = Tower with only 1 backhaul
Powerco drops a 2nd feed in, but with Manual cutover = Static routing, having to manually change the route between backhauls Powerco Adds intelligence to substation, able to automatically switch during a failure = OSPF Routing Powerco Monitors utilization of feeds to substation = This backhaul is full, but I'm not sure where it's all going Powerco Adds intelligence to individual meter = We can see how much data each customer is using Powerco is able to use Smart Meter to manage Loads during peak times = I'm going to queue Netflix so that my backhaul doesn't overload at 7pm

Isn't the powerco basically doing the exact same thing we do? Managing the electrons....

You could tell the show was geared at it being a humanitarian issue, these poor people losing their power... how will they survive, but the majority of the background images were of people powering consumer electronics... not a

Well, maybe some of them. I don't think the ones around here have that
capability.  Wouldn't they have to have some large contactors and a
relay?  I think that alone occupies a lot more space than the
smartmeters occupy.

For now I think they are mostly big brother watching.

I compare it to cable. With analog cable, they had to send a guy in a truck to shut off your service, but with digital cable a computer can do it
any time.  I assume smartmeters have a remote shutoff capability.
