I agree with having a test to buy a firearm. But only a competency test for things like operation and safety. A test for things like the purpose for user may be easily abused. Just like a driver's license, if you price yourself untrustworthy, like DWI or in find case, felons, then rights would be restricted.
In a free society the main deterrent should be punishment when a person does wrong, not trying to prevent someone from doing wrong by restricting freedom of everyone. Democracy is messy and the desire to prevent anything bad from ever happening is an excessive restriction on freedom.
