Gun owner here of a very nice S&W MP40 with grip laser, and a smaller 9MM, and unlike most on this list I’m a veteran too professionally trained in a variety of weapons systems. That said, my views are not what one might expect because above all I believe in rationality. Absolutism, like literalism, is another name for extremism and such people have an aversion to science and reason.
We are the only country so lacking in judgment, so unable to grasp the concept of proportionality (reacting to real risk, versus chicken shit fear) that we’ll spend trillions of dollars, lead thousands of our own to death, and maim and/or inflict PTSD upon tens of thousands to stop “terrorism,” when statistically the real threat of being impacted by terror is less likely than breaking your hip in the shower. Meanwhile, guns improperly used or otherwise used for indefensible violence have killed more people in the past 40 years than all our wars combined since the birth of the nation and we say there’s nothing we can do because “freedom.” We are a country whose population is chronically unable to process fact, lives in perpetual fear of their neighbors, nor can think critically on a great many truly existential problems. Finally, I have a CCP, but I don’t unless I were out hiking or motorcycling out somewhere remotely. Of all the reasons the conceal carry, the worst argument is because one is afraid of everything and everyone around them. Civilized societies simply don’t do this. That’s not a debatable point. It is not all about the criminals or idiots. Just look at the statistics for accidents with weapons. The only way to save lifes is to be very restrictive. If someone wants to shoot he can go to a shooting club and leave the weapon there. It is not freedom to have a gun at home. It is silly esp. with kids around. You can't avoid killing with banning weapons but you can reduce it.
