OK, the words you never want to hear on a tech support call: "My brother in law is here and he has a PhD in computer science." And Mr. PhD says the problem is definitely bad Internet service.

Oh, and he changed a bunch of stuff the customer doesn't understand and now he's gone back home to Minnesota.

Anyway, even after having the customer factory default his new TP-Link Archer C7 AC1750 router, it has a consistent 900-1000 msec ping latency. Plus it's pingable from the Internet by default, which I find unusual.

Had the customer fish his old Linksys WRT120N out of the garbage, now with a busted antenna, and speeds and ping times are fine.

Hmmmmmmm, I don't have much experience with TP-Link, but this does not give me a good impression. I assumed the brother in law had done something weird with QoS or firewall settings, but it was the same after being defaulted. Customer says it cost like $100 on Amazon and was advertised as having the performance of routers costing twice as much.
