OK, the words you never want to hear on a tech support call: "My brother in
law is here and he has a PhD in computer science." And Mr. PhD says the
problem is definitely bad Internet service.
Oh, and he changed a bunch of stuff the customer doesn't understand and now
he's gone back home to Minnesota.
Anyway, even after having the customer factory default his new TP-Link
Archer C7 AC1750 router, it has a consistent 900-1000 msec ping latency.
Plus it's pingable from the Internet by default, which I find unusual.
Had the customer fish his old Linksys WRT120N out of the garbage, now with a
busted antenna, and speeds and ping times are fine.
Hmmmmmmm, I don't have much experience with TP-Link, but this does not give
me a good impression. I assumed the brother in law had done something weird
with QoS or firewall settings, but it was the same after being defaulted.
Customer says it cost like $100 on Amazon and was advertised as having the
performance of routers costing twice as much.
