I didn’t think the deadline had arrived yet, and that the next step
would be for Apple to present their arguments to the court.
Also I thought it was an older iPhone and what the govt wanted was
for Apple to bypass the time delay between PIN tries and bricking the
phone after 10 wrong tries, and then the govt would set up a robot to
just try all the 4 digit PINs.

The better question is the NSA so inept that their job that they
can’t break into the phone themselves? Or do they just not want the

Every decent code writer at Apple that has access to the source code
and a compiler has the tools to do this at will. With or without the
knowledge or approval of Apple.
Again, can someone give me an example of things I need to encrypt so
securely that the NSA should not have access?
Financial stuff is the domain of the IRS. They have the right to
peek into all corners of your financial life.
Post office has always had the right to open and read your mail. How
is this any different?

My understanding--and Apple's representation--is that no one at Apple
actually has the tools to do this. If they develop that ability in
house then a human or humans then have those tools. This is then a de
facto compromise of the security, humans being notoriously
susceptible to corruption. What was that Machiavelli said about
power?And possession of those tools is a lot of power.

Although at the same time, If they're trying to unlock the
phone, couldn't the Gov't with it's vast resources, just
simply make a bit by bit copy of the flash chip in the phone
and just go through and try every unlock code?
