I came into this thread late, but I was once told that the replacements
where you remove the ballast and wire line voltage to the ends are 'not
allowed' because they change the UL rating of the Fixture, and therefore
could be pointed to in a fire. I'm not sure if that is actually true or
not. So I guess it depends on if you own your building, or if if you're
leasing/what your local codes say.

Go for it. We did it earlier this year. HUGE difference in lighting. Really
brightens up the office. There are a couple variations. There are ones when
you don't remove the ballast. I wouldn't do that. They have ones that have
positive / negative on each tombstone (the center piece for each bulb to
connect to) and then they have ones where you wire all the leads of all (both)
tombstones on one end to positive and all the leads at the other end to
negative (not polarity sensitive). That's what we did.
Here's what we bought (40 bulbs purchased, 1 bad, immediately replaced by the
company). They had great tech support. They even sent us a dimmer because the
Leviton one on Amazon didn't work. I can inquire with them which dimmer was
the one to get. They dim to about 75% without flicker

Anyone ever replaced their standard fluorescence ceiling lights with LEDs?
I haven't researched it much yet, but someone told me you can't just use a drop
in long bulb replacement.
You have to change out the center piece, forgot what that's called.
Is that correct?
Is this something I can do myself? Or do I need to hire a company?
My system has about 24 bays with three bulbs each drawing about 1500W when they
are all working.
Do I save much by going LED on these? What's ROI?
