Desert shots over long distances are affected by ducting... Thermal
inversion for one....over water we have other issues to contend with as
well.... Diversity is one way to overcome predictive issues and some
unforeseen fading phenomena... Rain in desert... High winds over water...
These all affect radio signals and more frequently attributed to specific
wavelength.. Look at legacy telco links... Diversity (spatial and now
defunct frequency)  was used.   Another trick was scatter links but I think
those are no longer allowed..
