You don't seem to be open to the thought of groundbreaking changes in
technology - like the transition from propellers to jets - which are actually
the norm in technological evolution.
My hunch is that we have to break away from the thought of "computation" or
mere computation - wh. exerts a vice-like grip on imaginations - and think
maybe in terms of "comparison" machines, or parts of machines. I wonder
whether it would be possible to do physical comparison of images - wh. is
really the foundation of human intelligence - not in the brain via logic gates,
but rather "on-site" in the relevant organs, in hands, legs, guts, retinas,
eardrums - true "morphological computing."

It seems possible that hybrid digital-analog computing could have some life
to it -- maybe someone will launch an APU (Analog Processing Unit) card,
similar to GPU cards today. That would be really cool for some applications,
and could help with some AI algorithms.
Recurrent neural nets being an obvious example...
