just camel, this sounds nice to all of us, but it is impractical because evolution drives us to protect ourselves, win competitions, and acquire advantages. Those who do not play this game at least to some extent are destroyed by those who do. For any system to work, it must acknowledge that no matter how much we dislike the fact, these drives are irrevocably part of our nature, and find a way to appropriately respond to that fact. We must be honest with ourselves about our own nastiness as a species in order to overcome it. Any system which ignores this is doomed to failure. Capitalism is an (imperfect) answer to this. There are surely better answers, but capitalism is not inherently evil; it is an improvement over strict dog-eat-dog because (for the most part) it co-opts selfish urges towards mutual benefit. Right now it is the best *working *system available to us. When a more effective solution becomes available, we will undoubtedly move towards it. But we are constrained from moving towards many nicer sounding systems by the fact that selfishness *does *exist, even though we strongly dislike it, and these nicer sounding systems have no answer to this issue.
