Applications for AGI. 1. Automating human labor. 2. Artificial bodies and brains to defeat death by backing up our minds. 3. Evolution of artificial life (self replicating robots, nanotechnology, and organisms based on alternatives to DNA and protein).
In our lifetimes I expect to see progress mostly in (1). I agree with Ben that it will be a gradual process. Economic growth will continue to create new jobs to replace the ones automated for many decades to come.
