No. You don't. You are just not yet used to staying fully conscious during sleep. That's all. There are many people who stay conscious during any phase of sleep. It just requires training.

Death is also just a shift of consciousness. It's like shifting our attention from sensorimotoric input from the physical realm away to input from the non-physical realm. Most people fall unconscious because they are not used to that transition.

Consciousness just "tunes" into different aspects of reality. Consciousness which is not developed will "hang around" in a more ergodic environment where it can wreck little havoc. Our physical reality is such an environment. We stay in it as long as we cling on to our body and other illusions of form. In a virtual reality, consciousness can only influence and destroy virtual, physical aspects but nothing relevant. You learn to master your thoughts and you turn your subconsciousness into consciousness so you know whats going on in yourself and then we "move on".

You don't want to children who identify with their WoW avatar and who drone bomb each other to run your more fundamental reality frames - do you? It's an evolutionary thing. This process has evolved and proven to be very effective. If you take Nick Bostrom's model an add evolution as the driving force to it you are almost there.
