Mike Tintner said: To clarify any possible confusion here. I - and the scientists concerned - absolutely do not mean grounding as in pointing to things. I and they are talking about various formsof imaginative simulation, which are usually unconscious. ------------------------
I think that the important thing here is that imaginative simulation is necessary for higher intelligence, (and perhaps for lower intelligence as well.) Sure multi-modal sensory data, and robotic interactions with the world could make a good AI program better, but the real problem for us right now (those of us who would actually write good AI programs if we knew a little more) is to develop a program capable of integrating complex data derived from a IO data environment where an 'object' can and typically does appear in many forms and variants. Right now, the art of contemporary computer programming is not advanced enough to solve this problem. I am interested in text based AI because I believe a text based IO data environment is rich enough to supply an advanced AI program with enough information for it to exhibit higher intelligence. The argument of whether vision or multi-sensor is necessary for higher intelligence does not interest me anymore than the deterministic vs free will arguments that seem to drag on through the centuries in these AI philosophy groups. (Maybe I should not have mentioned the deterministic vs free-will thing in this group-sorry.) But the idea that vision is necessary for true advancements in AGI is not warranted by any hard evidence. This is significant since good computational vision systems have been around for years now. Vision systems programming suffers from the same kind of complexity problems that other AI programming suffers from. It's a complexity problem.
