Hi Brian,

In my case that isn't it as I just replaced the ignition switch. The old one froze in the starter position one day. That got exciting very quickly. The car started and the starter was still firing. The only way I could shut it off was to dive out of the car, open the trunk and disconnect the battery. I ordered the new ignition switch the next day :-)

The starter is fairly new. Well fairly in terms of days running. It is about 12 years old and even though the car sits in an air conditioned and heated shop I guess it could still be the culprit. I'll have to check my records as I don't remember now if it was new, a rebuild, or an APE purchase.

I had to spend tonight insulating pipes in the attic getting ready for 3 days below freezing in Houston. That should prove interesting for a lot of people who don't think about the water pipes above the insulation in the attic :-(

I wouldn't completely rule out an ignition switch problem.

I always install starter relays in the earlier Alfas. Takes the load off that fragile ignition switch..

Hi Stevan,

I also have a 73 Berlina with the same starter set up as you and have the exact same starter oddity. So far it has always eventually started, but sometimes does take a few turns of the key with nothing but a click.

Next time I go out to the shop [likely this weekend] I was going to start cleaning everything in the electrical path between the ignition and the starter and see if that had any effect. I'll let you know what happens.

Recently, when turning the key to start, the first one or two times there is nothing but a solenoid click. By the 3rd or 4th time, it usually starts as normal. Sometimes, it's completely normal. > What's my troubleshooting repair path on this one? I have a spare starter I can have rebuilt.
