My old '86 Spider had the innards of the cat. converter disintegrate and
block the exit...TWICE ! (I did a postmortem to see why the second one
failed; there were just chunks of the honeycomb inside). I must admit it
was an aftermarket cat since I just couldn't see paying for a OE model for a
car that didn't have much time left on the planet.
The GTV has an IAP stock version muffler system and it could be the problem
but I don't think that it has any fiberglass inside. Aren't there just
baffles in there ? I'll bang on the two mufflers and see if anything is
loose inside.
Anyway, I'll keep it in mind the next time it happens.
