My stock cat on my old '86 did the same thing, the honeycomb broke off and rotated and then plugged the hole. Fixed it with a hanger and lots of poking motions :-).

Skip,

My old '86 Spider had the innards of the cat. converter disintegrate and
block the exit...TWICE ! (I did a postmortem to see why the second one
failed; there were just chunks of the honeycomb inside). I must admit it
was an aftermarket cat since I just couldn't see paying for a OE model for a
car that didn't have much time left on the planet.

The GTV has an IAP stock version muffler system and it could be the problem
but I don't think that it has any fiberglass inside. Aren't there just
baffles in there ? I'll bang on the two mufflers and see if anything is
loose inside.

Anyway, I'll keep it in mind the next time it happens.

Thanks,

  Bruce and all,
I have seen this a couple of times. Once on a GTV when the fiberglass
from the muffler came dislodged on the way to a track event at Roebling
Roads and plugged the exhaust behind the rear muffler. We just unbolted the
rear pipe section and rode the rest of the way with one hand on the floor
board to make sure we didn't set it on fire ;-)
Another time on an American car (Ouch, I just bit my tongue!!). A
baffle came loose inside the muffler and would periodically flip up and
block the muffler outlet. Then it would fall back down and everything would
be fine until it did it again.
Darn, aren't intermittent problems fun to diagnose??

Subject: [alfa] loss o' power in GTV

Yesterday I experienced a very strange occurrence of loss of power whilst
driving my '73 GTV. I had just accelerated kinda hard, then let up on the
gas as I quickly approached the car in front of me. As the car in front
turned off the road, I tried to accelerate but nothing happened. The
engine
did not rev at all but was still running.
