I stopped by my local Alfa mech. (Julio at Milano Motors, Md) and he thought the culprit was the FI's fuel cutoff solenoid and the microswitch. When the solenoid is activated, the car will idle but there isn't any fuel for acceleration. He believes that the microswitch has become maladjusted (capricious, unstable, etc) and it switches on at the most inopportune times. To access the switch, you need to remove the FI pump from the car which can be a tedious job.
So the next time this happens, I'll pull the wire off the top of the solenoid (at least that is easy to access!) and see if power is restored. If it is the switch, I'll leave the wire unattached until I find the time to remove the FI pump.
