all i can think of is, look in prefferenses an under playback make shure everything looks ok. not a bad idea to check around in there too because recently i had advance playback unchecked somehow. when i opened a playlist it would only play the first track and i couldn't figure out what was going on until i took a look in prefferenses playback and found it. i'm glad you did a custome install. i didn't know if you were up to that so i didn't suggest it before. hope it works for you.

Okay...here's my update on the Winamp situation: I have downloaded and installed the
version of Winamp that Dennis suggested! It does work better; this is to say that I
can do the command that gives me the track length. However, alt-R is still
"hit-and-miss; when I first open a file to play, alt-R does nothing! However,
if I close (then re-open) the Winamp main window, alt-R will then take me to the end
of the track! Have no idea of why this is, but I suppose I can learn to live with
it; at least it works better than what I had before! Thanks to Dennis for pointing
me to this version of Winamp!

Are you looking in the preferences tree view? The skins area has
some subcategories, and in the general skins area, you will see
installed skins, and information about the current one that is set,
which should be classic, but you'll know for sure when you check it.
Within the skins category you should see subentries for classic and
modern skins, each of which has settings associated with it.

No, I'm sure your computer is fine; this isn't something to spend
money and huge effort on, you just have to figure out what to tweak
in settings.
Look in the skins area. You'll see installed skins. Focus on the
classic one, as that's the one you should be using, and check out
the options there.

The truth is that whoever is working on the winamp programme now is
probably a very small development team, and it isn't necessarily a
priority project for whoever now runs winamp.com as a whole. So on
the page it says 5.91 still, but that isn't the version that's
there anymore. I do think not putting the version number in the
filename of the installer exe is silly, but whether you have 5.91
or 5.92, it'll likely make little or no difference to you. You saw
the changes I posted earlier. There was no interface overhaul, and
there never really has been -- the only reason winamp is really
still around is that people like the look of the thing, and now
it's a nostalgia thing for people apparently (not those of us who
always used it and never saw any huge reason to stop of course), so
theyr'e not going to change the appearance of it so long as they
keep the desktop programme around.
As for the annoying bar, I still can't tell you what it is from
your description, but there's likely a way to be rid of it if you
don't like it. I think you'll have to play around with the
settings; do some experiments and see what you come up with.
As for the JAWS commands not working, yes, it could have something
to do with the interface not being as expected, and so the scripts
that execute the commands aren't finding what is expected to be
there. Again, go into your settings and see what you find. You
might particularly want to look at the skins area of the tree view.
I have visualisations set to off, no spectrum analyser, etc. Not
sure if that would make a difference or not -- I used to live with
a sighted person and some of that stuff was on, but winamp still
seemed to work as I expected it to. Still, maybe you can try
messing with it and see.
Another thing to consider is JAWS itself. DO you have an older
version of JAWS on your computer? Perhaps try running that, and see
if the scripts work the way they're supposed to there.

gonna get 5.91 (and you don't know until you start to install) that
it is, in fact, 5.92; may be as Casey is saying "not really any
difference" probably just a coincidence that I'm seeing the change;
furthermore, I guess that the way it's appearing to me is something
that I'm just "stuck with" it's just frustrating when some of those
commands that _always_ worked for me; now it's hit-and-miss!" I
sometimes can alt-tab away; then alt-tab back to Winamp and it'll
go ahead and work as supposed to! But unless someone can tell me of
a good "fix" guess I'm just stuck with limping along with it as it is!

Hey.

Never used that keystroke either. But it appears to be working
here. That is a JAWS thing though, not a winamp keystroke.

The length will show in the playlist editor still though even if
that thing doesn't work.

After a test, it appears that alt-r function you are talking
about is also a little goodie Freedom Scientific threw in. So, it
sounds like your jaws winamp commands aren't working right now,
or at least some of them. When was the last time you restarted jaws?

You did set it to classic, right?

That bar thing that you mentioned, I don't know what it is, but
it's probably something that was there in older versions, too,
and which got turned off. I really don't think they changed the
look of Winamp at all.

Well there's this long narrow bar across the screen for one
thing; another thing: although it does say that I can jump to the
end of the track with alt-R, it doesn't work; instead, it says I
_must_ be inside the Winamp main window or playlist editor (which
I believe I am) but whenever I do alt-R, that's the message I

You can still use plugins, since winamp pretty much relies on
them to work, however some old plugins may not function anymore.
Some were built in to winamp, like the gracenote plugin. The
new version I believe removes one or two that were part of the
programme. All winamp archive downloads contain a version
change log that goes back at least 20 years, so you can see
exactly what has been done with the different versions, but
most of it is pretty technical behind the scenes stuff that
doesn't mean much to the average user.
If you still have old winamp plugins that you got yourself and
that you like, you can try them -- I don't think I really use
any myself, but they should work still.
