There is no incentive to get a substance licensed which is not patentable. Spices and soap are not patentable. They have been with us for millennia.
Neem, Azadirachta indica, a tropical mahogany, was patented recently as an insecticide in the US. This outraged India and the patent was revoked. It is a standard ingredient in curries of Southern India. -- Larry Wallace Cincinnati
