Yes, I've tested TeleGPS with the D72A. Maybe you missed one of the
configuration values necessary to make APRS work?

Checkout the screen shot on page 23 of the TeleGPS manual, which you can
find here:

First, make sure the 'Telemetry/RDF/APRS Enable' button is pressed.

Next, select the APRS interval (in seconds). Note that the screenshot
says 'disabled' for that entry.

There's no hardware problem that I can possibly imagine that would let
the regular digital telemetry work while APRS was broken.

It's always possible that the Linux config program is doing something
screwy though.

You can talk directly to the device with an old-fashioned terminal
program (either cu or minicom in Linux); it's got a simple command
language and on-line help (type ?).
