Some possible options are: 1. Google could keep doing what it started last week, weeding out spam apps after they've been submitted, continuing the current "arms race." Undoubtedly Google has more resources to do this than a spammer, and thus would eventually prevail - but it's a slippery slope down to the walled garden from there. 2. Charging a *small* fee per app would actually work, without unduly hurting most legitimate devs. Maybe $5 or $10 per app; if your app isn't worth $10 to you to list, how serious can you be? OTOH, even such a small fee would stop the spam dead in its tracks. There might be a few legitimate edge cases which would be adversely affected, but it's worth considering nonetheless. 3. Improving the discoverability of quality apps on the Market, and letting the crap fall to the bottom. This seems like the best solution, if it's done well - but so far, Google has shown itself to be either unwilling or unable to do this. In the meanwhile, the upshot is that "Just In" has become useless for getting apps noticed. As some folks have been saying for a long time, devs need to be thinking of the Market as only a delivery mechanism, not a publicity channel. You need to publicize your apps some other way.
