Oh I give my stuff away for free and count on the back end that
overlaps with my day job.

At any rate, I've given up on the idea of charging per pop on the
handset side, so that's taking away a lot of headache. Just not worth
the hassle and I expect greater penetration to build possible interest
in the back end content.
Looking at other (seemingly viable) apps, this seems to be a
significant trend.

In this constellation, the low upfront cost and effort come into play.
No days spent setting up a cross-compilation environment or paying any
license fees. Ever looked at the Scratchbox manual? (outch) So
Android's pretty friendly in that regard, especially if you're already
using Eclipse/Java, which is a fairly commonplace development
scenario.
Noteworthy also that the entire Java VM (thread model) is available
and a great deal of control over the handset in general.
