Regarding the barriers - have a look at Padmasree Warrior’s (from
Motorola) keynote video from Java One this year. She has statistics
for percentage of software sold via carrier vs third party. The US is
by far the worst for carrier lock down with over 90% of software being
sold that way. Europe is pretty good with only about 50% but in Asia
the situation is the total reverse of the US with most software not
being sold by carriers. I can understand how people in the US can
have the perception that the market is closed but I don't think that
is the reality. It certainly isn't my experience. Maybe you need to
look at markets outside of where you live.
Handango does represent a viable market place. It might not make you
a millionaire but it is a start and you can get valuable feedback from
customers.
I know Android is attractive but there is no market at the moment.
Even once the handsets are released it will take time to gain traction
unless someone is prepared to invest in a mega hype marketing campaing
like Apple did for the iPhone. I think in the time it takes for the
Android market to emerge you could have Juwo running on 1 or 2 more
platforms. Its keeping your eggs in multiple baskets. Think about
your pitch to venture capitalists - a product which runs on Java ME,
Blackberry and Android sounds pretty attractive. Finally, once
Android emerges I think there is going to be a lot of work porting
Java ME apps. to Android - not the most fun job in the world but it
can bring in some money.
