Android is not "based on the opensource model". Google simply wrapped the
code in an open source license when they finally released it. If you can't
replace the system on your G1, all the code in the world isn't going to do
you a bit of good. There's no "Android platform community" outside of the
Googleplex, and there's no big likelihood of their being one anytime soon.

There's something decidedly schizophrenic going on here. On the one hand,
folks are clearly hoping that Android will receive something better than the
"damning with faint praise" reception it's gotten so far. On the other hand,
when someone points out a lack of basic services (video, MMS, proper email
support, etc., etc...), then we fall back onto the "Well, _you_ fix it"
model.

Nobody (except a techno-geek) wants a beta cell phone.
